STABITERM 221

05.04.2020

STABITERM 221 is a fire-retardant compound for structural fire protection of steel structures with high fire-resistance requirements: R90, R120 and R150. It provides 90 to 150 minutes of fire protection and forms a smooth, hard coating that resists mechanical impact.

STABITERM 221 compound for structural fire protection of steel

Where to use it

  • load-bearing steel structures where the design requires R90, R120 or R150;
  • columns, beams and trusses where the coating has to withstand mechanical loads — impacts, contact with equipment;
  • fast-track projects: the compound is applied in a thick layer, up to 2 mm per pass.

How it works

The compound has its own heat-insulating capacity and slows down heating of the steel in a fire by itself. At high temperatures, above +200 °C, it additionally forms a porous heat-insulating layer. That is why 221 works where high fire-resistance ratings are required.

221 or 217

STABITERM 217 is a thin-film intumescent paint that provides 15 to 120 minutes and suits most tasks up to R120. STABITERM 221 is chosen when R90–R150 or a durable, impact-resistant coating is needed. The final choice depends on the fire protection design — we will advise based on your specification.

Surface preparation and application

  • The steel is cleaned of rust, mill scale, oil and dust and primed: GF-021 primer or equivalents agreed with the STABITERM manufacturer. Primers from other manufacturers, such as Jotun and Hempel, are also suitable.
  • The compound is applied to a dry primed surface at temperatures from +5 °C to +40 °C.
  • The main method is airless spraying with Graco, Wagner or Contracor type units. Up to 2 mm can be applied in one pass, which noticeably reduces labour.
  • Coating thickness is checked with a thickness gauge against the fire protection design.

Consumption and coating thickness

We calculate consumption and fire-protective layer thickness for your project: they depend on the required fire-resistance rating and the section factor of each steel profile. Send us the steel specification and we will calculate it for every profile.

FAQ

What fire resistance does 221 provide? 90 to 150 minutes — the compound is recommended for structures requiring R90, R120 and R150.

How many coats are needed? It depends on the coating thickness required by the design. Up to 2 mm is applied per pass, so there are usually fewer coats than with thin-film paints.

Will the coating withstand impacts? The coating is hard and dense, resists mechanical impact and keeps its texture throughout its service life.

How much compound does a project need? It depends on the required fire-resistance rating and the steel profiles. Send us the specification and we will calculate it.
